Red Lake

Red Lake has a uniqueness that does not exist in any other lake: it was created in 1837 after a strong, sweeping rain, when a big rock was struck by lightning, blocked the river and formed a kind of dam. It is about 93 m deep and covers about 12.01 hectares. The name of “Lacul Roșu” comes from the reddish alluvia deposited in the lake by the Red Creek. In the lake there are still tree trunks. Around it there are many hiking trails, markets, pensions. A few hours may be spent on the water. The lake is located at 990 meters near the Bicaz Dam. It is the only natural lake of Romania. The lake and its environs are very popular with the local population for recreation, events and excursions. The place is also considered a place of relaxation and spa against exhaustion, mental stress and intellectual. You can take a boat ride along the lake. By the lake there are colourful markets with local goods.
